Pancakes and food colouring
Tomorrow is one of my children’s favourite days. PANCAKE DAY! We have pancakes on a semi-regular basis here, so something is needed to distinguish it from other days.
Last year, we had them for breakfast, lunch AND dinner, which really tickled the kids and they requested the same this year. Unfortunately, due to various complications including post-event fatigue, school and swimming lessons, this isn’t an option for the 4th of March this year, so we agreed to have our special day yesterday; March 2nd.
We decided it would be fun to start the day with ‘thick’ pancakes (american style) and have ‘thin’ for the other two meals.
We’re such big fans that after eyeing up my friend’s dedicated pans every camping trip, I finally sourced a couple of my own.

I love these pans so much, they’re super non stick and I can serve up a bunch to multiple people quickly and easily, instead of one at a time to two hungry and demanding children! We did sweet ones only, so the kids broke out the chocolate spread, berries, lemon and sugar and various other spreads we keep in the house for pancakes, including Aldi’s mars spread rip-off: ‘Titan’.
I think it took 4 rounds of american style smileys before the kids were full and had to stop…
We ate late and everyone was very full till quite late in the day, so lunch was skipped. We had a lovely long park outing and dog walk and a few hours later it was time for dinner! I don’t know how we’ve never done this before, but it suddenly occurred to me I could add food colouring to the batter.

I whipped up a big bowl of batter, dumped a few ladles of batter in a separate jug and started to experiment. Pink pancakes were first, my daughter was delighted!
The boy one requested purple next, it wasn’t quite the shade I was after but the kiddos were happy.
In case you were wondering, yes that is the classic combo of sausage, cheese and berries…..
My kids both love to experiment with weird food combinations; they have previously eaten pomegranate seeds dipped in mayonnaise, put sprinkles on mashed potato and so on.

We love savoury as well as sweet ones and for our dinner pancakes, we had various toppings available, including sausage, salami, cheese, onion, sliced turkey, sweetcorn, pesto and olives.
Blue pancakes were next on the menu, followed swiftly by green, orange and then even a couple of mixed colour pancakes with the leftover colours of batter.

Even Captain Doggy Paws got to partake! He is a big pancake fan and got this tasty green one which went a bit awry in the pan.
Last year we made him his own special ones with dog-friendly toppings, but this year I hadn’t made quite enough batter to satisfy the horde, so he had to make-do.
I feel he was unappreciative of my colour experiments.

Eventually the boy one declared his stomach hurt and he was done; the girl one had also had her fill and I was finally able to eat some pancakes myself! I started with a couple of the savoury and moved onto the sweet and made the rather large mistake of using the same plate.
This led to an accidental combination of banana and red pesto. 100% do not recommend.

We may not have managed to eat pancakes for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but we did manage to eat pancakes for every meal that we did eat! Two happy children and one exhausted mama, but I was glad to make my kiddos happy 🙂
I hope you have fun making pancakes tomorrow, make sure you learn from my mistakes and use separate plates if you’re going for savoury AND sweet…
